Chicagoland Women Reclaim Their Sexual Radiance

I am very excited about teaching Women Healing Women: Reclaiming Our Sexual Radiance in the Chicago area. Cheryl Good and I taught it in Sedona, AZ in April, 2013. All the women who attended were deeply transformed. As a Certified Nurse-Midwife for almost 25 years, I have been aware, of the need for this type of healing process for women for a long time. I believe if every woman went through this process, the world would be radically changed for the better. Practice the Art of Chakra Talk

Chakra Talk

This practice allows you to access the wisdom held in your chakra energy centers. You will lend your voice to the chakra center you want to communicate with it in a direct way. The more you are able to relax and surrender the easier it is to access the wisdom of your chakras speaking  in their unique voice.

Set aside 30-60 minutes for this practice. Make sure the phone is off and that you won’t be disturbed. This can be done alone or with a partner. If done alone have your journal nearby so you can take notes. You may also choose to record the experience. If done with a partner, only one person speaks and the other acts as a witness. They may take notes if that feels appropriate to both parties. The witness should not interrupt the speaker while the chakra is talking.

Begin with a Heart Salutation. Sit across from your partner and look into their eyes. Maintaining eye contact throughout the rest of the process, begin by extending your arms towards the earth, palms together. Then, inhale and keeping your hands in prayer position, bring them to your heart. Exhale, as you bow forward and acknowledge the Divine in each other with the Sanskrit salutation “Namaste.” Namaste means “I honor the Divine in you as a reflection of the Divine in me.” Inhale, as you straighten back up. Finally, exhale as you allow your hands to return to the starting position, pointed towards the earth.

Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Now,  direct your attention to the chakra you are going to listen to. Take slow, gentle, relaxing breaths into your belly. Relax deeply for about several minutes. As your exhale, breathe out any tension you are holding. As you inhale, breathe in life force energy (pnana/chi/ki) and feel your body being energized.

When you are relaxed, focus your attention on the chakra you feel called to connect with. Place your hands over the area related to that particular chakra. Breathe into it and begin to tune into the energy of this chakra. Invite it to speak through you, say (the name of the chakra,) Example- “Heart, I desire to receive your wisdom and invite you to speak to me through my voice.”

Then allow the chakra to speak to you, in the first person, “I, Heart, want to share that I have been feeling ignored lately. Crystal has been… I would like…. It would be helpful if…” Continue to tune in for 5-10 minutes or longer. There may be pauses as the information is accessed. Stay present with the process until it feels complete.

End with a Heart Salutation.

Yoni Talk and the Goddess Within

I just returned from teaching an Awakening the Goddess Within workshop in North Carolina. Being with this group of women was a fresh reminder of the power we tap into when we are able to stop and listen to our body-wisdom.

“Yoni,” is a Sanskrit word that means cosmic matrix. It is the word we use in Tantra to refer to a woman’s vagina. It is possible to tap into the wisdom held in this sacred part of the body. This practice allows you to access the wisdom held in your Yoni. You are lending your voice to your Yoni so it can communicate with you directly. The more you are able to relax and surrender to this process the easier it is to access the wisdom of your Yoni and experience its unique voice.

Set aside 30-60 minutes for this practice. Make sure the phone is turned off and let other people in your home know not to disturb you for the next hour. This practice can be done alone or with a partner. If done alone have your journal nearby so you can take notes afterwards. You may also choose to record the experience. If done with a partner, only one person speaks and the other acts as a witness. The witness may take notes if that feels appropriate to both parties. The witness should not interrupt the speaker while they are allowing their Yoni to speak.

The Heart Salutation

Begin this practice with a Heart Salutation. This is done by extending your arms towards the earth with your palms together. Inhale, as you straighten back up. Finally, exhale as you allow your hands to return to the starting position, pointed towards the earth.

The Bubble

Now, create a bubble around you (and your partner). Do this by waving your arms around both of you as you define the shape of the bubble that surrounds you. You will then be removing things from this bubble that won’t serve you during this practice (the past, distractions, anger, worry, etc.) Do this by making a  gesture as if removing an object from your bubble and verbally share what you are removing from the bubble out loud. Then, Next, state what things you want to bring into the bubble, these are things that will enhance your connection (love, willingness, presence, trust etc.) Make a gesture as if physically bringing them into the bubble. Creating the bubble helps to call you into present moment awareness and creates a safe space in which to practice Yoni Talk.

Share Your Desires, Fears and Boundaries

Once the bubble is created, share your intentions/desires, fears and boundaries related to this practice. First, one person speaks while the other person listens without judgment or commentary. Then you switch roles. Here is an example:

“I desire to stay present, open and connect deeply my Yoni.”

“My fear is that I will get self-conscious and freeze up.”

“My boundary is to stay connected, to feel what is arising and share even if I start to cry.”

Why boundaries? When I teach this practice in my classes, people often have resistance to setting boundaries. I explain that boundaries are not walls, they are bridges. Bridges helps to bring people together. Intimacy happens when people have healthy boundaries. Healthy boundaries allow you to feel safe, stay open and be present. Boundaries are dynamic, so it is important to check-in periodically with yourself to see if your boundaries have changed. If they have changed, update your partner so they can honor your new boundaries. Here are a few examples:

“I need to end this practice by noon.”

“I don’t want to be touched during this process.”

“I want to stay present and open to your support. I would like you to remind me to open my eyes if I seem to be disconnecting from you.”

Yoni Talk

Then allow Yoni to speak to you, in the first person, “I,  Sacred Flower,  want to share that I have been feeling ignored lately.  I notice you … I would like…. It would be helpful if…” Continue to tune in for 15 minutes or longer. There may be phases as the information is accessed. Stay present with the process until it feels complete. End with a Heart Salutation.

If you are alone, take time to journal.

If you are with a friend, share your experience verbally. Take a short break and then switch roles.

Notice how this experience impacts your life over the next few days and weeks.

Love, Heartbreak and Cancer

About my Mother, Freda Morris Belden,

At the moment I am immersed in caring for my mother. She is dying of primary brain cancer. I took her to the ER in May for confusion and lethargy and she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She had surgery a few days later and we learned it was a very aggressive form of cancer. She was discharge from the hospital to my house and I have been caring for her ever since.

My mother improved after surgery. She made the choice to not to have radiation or chemo. Treatment would only give her a few months and would have a negative effect on her quality of life. She declared she had lived a good life and wanted to die consciously. She has been interested in Consciousness since the 1960’s.

I introduced her to the Buddhist practice of Phowa , which I was initiated into in May 2006. It is the practice of learning how to live and die consciously. Phowa was created by the Amitabha Buddha. The Buddhist Stupa near my house is dedicated to the Amitabha Buddha and I have developed a deep connection to him since moving to Sedona. I t makes sense now that part of my reason for moving here was to prepare myself for helping my mother cross over.

Almost immediately after getting out of the hospital, my mother began saying her goodbyes to her friends and family. She meditated twice daily. She had a couple of presentations she wanted to do for the local Ken Wilber group she was in. She arranged to do the presentations and they were well received. She kept a journal and considered writing her third book.

In July, about a month after her surgery, I took my to Washington state to visit her oldest-best friend. She spent a week with her. I then took her on a trip around the Olympic Peninsula. We had a great time. She was able to enjoy the sights and even hike a bit. She said it was the first time she took a trip just for fun. The last vacation I had taken with her was more than 40 years ago. I am so grateful I took the time to be with her while she still was relatively healthy.

After we returned to Sedona my sons came to visit. My younger son, Josh was the last person on her list of people she needed to tell goodbye. Eli, my older son, had come to see her with his family shortly after she came home from the hospital. Within days, after they left that she began a gradual decline. In August, my brother and his wife came to visit and care for Mom. I took the opportunity to go back east for 2 weeks to visit my grandson, Zev, in Atlanta and attend a conference in North Carolina. During the time I was gone, I realized how much of my energy was being used to support my mother’s process. It was good for me to have some time on my own.

While I was away, she had a drastic decline, becoming more confused and unable to get out of bed on her own. Since my return August 16th she continues to slip away. She is now bedridden and incontinent. She converses very little but responds occasionally. The good news is she is without pain and is mostly at peace. She likes to listen to relaxing music and talks by Adyashanti, Gangaji and Ekhart Tolle.

This experience has been incredibly humbling for me. It is much harder than I imagined it would be. Watching my mother slowly pass into the formless realm is at times heart breaking. What I know as her, is dissolving a little bit each day. Still, her body still eats, sleeps and breathes. Love and sadness dance in my heart as I sit by her bed and send her blessings.

Tantra Tip of the Day- Lucid Living

I read this great little book a while back, called Lucid Living by Timothy Freke. I checked it out of the library. It takes about 1 hour to read, if you savory each word. What I love about the book is that it is so simple and direct. The Good News! You can awaken today.

Here are the 7 insights he describes to wake up from the dream called life:

1-Life is a mystery.

2-Now is all you know.

3-You are not a person.

4-The world exists in you.

5-All is One.

6-You are a paradox.

7- Being one is loving all.

Today recognize that life is a dream and you are the dreamer. You are both in the dream and dreaming it at the same time. Everyone in the dream is the dreamer too.

Lucid living is whole heatedly engaging with ordinary life as an epic adventure of awakening. Enjoy life, it is a gift.

Tantra Tip of the Day- Live From the Heart

When my heart is open, I feel good. Joy natural flows through me and out into the world. I see the beauty all around me. The open-heart loves fearlessly.

When I am stuck in my thoughts, I sometimes feel like I am a hamster stuck on an exercise wheel. Thinking, thinking, thinking. It is easy to get trapped in the mind. The mind is always trying to figure things out. There is no figuring it out. Life is. Change happens.

Too much thinking can lead to anxiety, fear, worry and dissatisfaction. When you get in that state of mind the best thing you can do is shift out of your head and reconnect with your heart. I like to begin with the Heart Salutation as a way of reconnecting to my heart.

The Heart Salutation
Extend your arms towards the earth, palms together. Inhale, as you bring them to your heart while keeping your palms together. Exhale, as you bow forward and acknowledge the Divine in with the Sanskrit salutation Namaste. “Namaste” means, “I see the Divine in you as a reflection of the Divine within me.” In this example you are acknowledging the world as a mirror for seeing the Divine within yourself. Inhale, as you straighten back up. Finally, exhale as you allow your hands to return to the starting position, pointed towards the earth.

Bring your awareness into your heart center and breathe into it for a few minutes. Notice if your heart is open, closed or somewhere in between. Allow it to gradually begin to relax and open as you breathe into the center of your chest. Close your eyes and think of someone or something you love deeply and allow love fill your being. When you are ready open your eyes. Look around you and notice how you feel and what you experience around you.

Tantra Tip of the Day- Let Go of Past and Future

Tantra is about living in the present moment. Past and future only exist in the mind. Being present is our natural state of awareness. As babies we know the beauty of being in the freshness of each new moment. Yet, pretty early in life our parents and our culture do their best to get us out of the Now. While happily being in the moment, we were told to eat when we weren’t hungry, made to go to sleep when we weren’t tired, forced to get up early for school, and told to stop playing and come inside, so a visitor could grill us about what we want to be when we grow up.

Let’s face it we live in a world obsessed with past and future. The news recaps the past; advertising tells what we need to be happy in the future. Reclaiming the joy of living in the Now can feel like a challenge at times. How can we reclaim the joy of being fully present in the Now?

Step 1- Develop the Witness. Notice when you are not in the moment. The witness is that part of us that watches what is happening in an unattached way. When I am lost in past or future I feel anxious, worried, or discontent. Past or future is a good place to hide when things aren’t going the way I planned. When I activate the Witness, it is easy to notice if I am lost in past or future. Then I return present moment awareness.

Step 2- Be Present. Presence arises when your essential nature -Awareness, awakens to itself in each moment. Awareness is beyond space and time, beyond life and death. When you are present, you let go of past and future. You surrender to the moment. There is no resistance to what is. Being present is not only about being aware of what is happening on the level of form, it is being aware of the very space in which all forms come and go.

Most people have had moments of Presence, even if they didn’t call it that. Have you ever had the experience of watching a sunset? The world became still and all thoughts disappeared, as you sat in awe aware of the beauty unfolding before you. Or perhaps you have had the experience of running a race, skiing or riding your bike and suddenly you entered “The Zone” where you were one with everything, and your movements were effortless. Or when looking into the eyes of a newborn baby or your beloved, have you ever felt yourself melting into them until all sense of separation dissolved and you experienced Oneness? In all these situations, Presence emerged as you became liberated from identification with the thinking mind and surrendered into the direct experience of The Now.

Step 3- Accept the Now. Living in the Now, means accepting everything going on around you and within you exactly as it is in that moment. Acceptance means letting of outcome. It does not mean that you are a victim. You can make a conscious choice to shift what is happening through your actions and intentions. When you accept each moment as it is, the quality of Being becomes palpable and stress vanishes.

By developing the witness, living in the present moment and accepting what is, you will discover that you can learn to let go of living in the past. By aligning with your essential nature, spiritual wakefulness is arrived upon naturally.

Tantra Tip of the Day- Looking Beyond the Surface

I am reading a wonderful book on the practice of eye gazing as the primary practice that Rumi used with his teacher Shams to become enlightened. It is called The Spiritual Practices of Rumi, Radical Techniques for Beholding the Divine by Will Johnson. It contains Rumi’s poems and explores how the poems contain the secrets to his awakening process. It is beautiful and inspiring.

Eye gazing opens you to looking at life in a new way. The presence you develop in the practice begins to color your life. You begin to see beyond the surface of things.

Try this: As you move through your day take every opportunity to look beyond the surface of life. This requires being present and connecting to the world around you. Take a few moments every hour or so to connect with your breath and call yourself into the present moment. Breathe deeply into your belly and allow your shoulders to relax. Notice how it feels to be present. Look deeply into the eyes of the people you meet even if only for a moment. Become aware of the beauty hidden all around your. Feel gratitude for being alive.

Tantra Tip of the Day – Practice Opening and Presence Daily

If your desire is to awaken from the dream called life, then daily practice is essential. You will develop a natural vigilance and notice when you get lost and identified with your story.

Develop a daily practice in which you open yourself to what is arising and experience being in the moment, just as it is. Throughout the day notice when you are caught in a mind-stream of incessant thoughts, creating a story around past and future, losing touch with what is real and call your self back into the present moment.

Keep enough awareness in the body and notice if you begin to contract. As soon as you feel contraction allow yourself to open fully to whatever is arising. Presence and opening don’t require changing what is. Accept each moment. When you bring acceptance into each moment life naturally flows because there is no resistance.

Tantra Tip of the Day – Leaping into the Void, Part 3

Stop, be still and allow awareness of Awareness. When all thoughts stop, even for a moment, you awaken and discover that Truth as your essential nature. (This is paraphrased from a teaching by Gangaji.)

I have been very still the past few days. I have not been on the computer or doing much of anything. I have been meditating on Awareness and allowing myself to stay connected to it. My consciousness has shifted away from concerns and thoughts, towards being present with what is arising. I notice my ego is very uncomfortable with not doing and has been badgering me to stop being still. I know I am entering a new stage of awareness. I see my ego reacting as I approach a leap in consciousness.

Thoughts come and go but Awareness always is. I have contemplated this before but now I am exploring it at a deeper level and seeing how temporary thoughts are and yet how years of believing in them makes it challenging to just watch them without reacting. My ego has been filling my mind with thoughts and fears about the future. I have been dancing the razor’s edge switching my attention from Awareness to thoughts and back to Awareness.

Because of years of conditioning it is easy to be seduced by the thoughts and fears. Money issues are up and some big changes are in order. I am allowing myself to be in the stillness even as the turbulent thoughts flow through me. I have never been this present in watching my thoughts before. I am allowing the unfolding and being as still as I can while moving through my life. More to be revealed…

Today notice your thoughts arise and pass away. Be aware of that they are temporary. Become aware of the Awareness that always is. If fear arises see if you can watch it without getting caught in believing in it.
